FIFTH ANNUAL FREEDOM MARCH FOR THE WRONGFULLY CONVICTED

Pennsylvania—It took 17 years for Terrell Johnson to see life outside of prison for a crime he didn’t commit.  Jeffery Deskovic of New York spent 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Michael DeLoe is in his 5th year of wrongful conviction currently waiting for a trial date in the Washington County Courts.  Da’Ron Cox is in his 15th year of a wrongful conviction awaiting a post-conviction hearing to prove his innocence.

In order to raise public awareness of this problem, the 1st National Freedom March for the Wrongfully Convicted was held simultaneously in many states on June 3, 2009.  MaryAnn Lubas is the Pennsylvania Director for the Freedom March and continues this effort holding the 5th Annual Freedom March on June 3rd, 2013 on the steps of the City County Building in downtown Pittsburgh starting at 1:00 pm.  Speakers at the March will include Terrell Johnson, Erica Johnson, MaryAnn Lubas and others who this has affected.

Terrell Johnson: Terrell was released from prison and exonerated for the crime of murder in October of 2012 after spending 17 years of his young life behind bars!  There was no evidence and was convicted on the testimony of a drug addict with an extensive criminal record.  Evelyn McBryde was facing up to 50 years in prison.  Police PAID McBryde $10,000 and reduced and/or dropped outstanding charges against her after her testimony.  Terrell will give a 1st hand account of what being wrongfully convicted does to people and how life is now that he is free.

Erica Johnson: Erica’s husband Dylan Ryan Johnson has been imprisoned in Mexico just having been sentenced to 15 years for a crime that he did not commit.  The media has embraced Amanda Knox and shown support for Amanda.  Dylan is a Pennsylvania resident and his case needs as much attention as Amanda Knox.  Erica will speak on his case and the injustices they have endured.

MaryAnn Lubas is an advocate for the wrongfully convicted, director of the Pennsylvania Freedom March for the wrongfully convicted and co-ordinator for the Pittsburgh area filming of Lawless America – The Movie.  MaryAnn’s son Michael DeLoe was wrongfully convicted on Jan. 15th, 2009.  After getting over the initial shock of the injustices she saw in the trial, she came on board to bring awareness to the citizens of Pennsylvania.  She has traveled to Washington D.C. giving testimony on Capitol Hill as to the reform needed to stop this from continuing.  She has assisted in the co-ordination of a documentary film; Lawless America, whose purpose is to expose in film the injustices that happen all across our country.  Director and producer William Windsor has travelled all 50 states taking testimony of those that are victims of the corruption in the justice system.  Michael DeLoe’s case is one of many that will be featured in this documentary schedule to be released in 2014.

Other Speakers: Will be addressing the effects of wrongful conviction and their causes.
